Functional training is a type of exercise that focuses on movements and activities that mimic everyday tasks or specific sports movements. The goal of functional training is to improve overall physical fitness and performance by training the body to perform movements that are relevant to daily activities or sports.
Functional training exercises often involve multiple muscle groups and joints, and emphasize core stability and strength. They can include exercises such as squats, lunges, push-ups, and medicine ball throws. Functional training can also incorporate equipment such as resistance bands, kettlebells, and suspension trainers.
Functional training is particularly beneficial for athletes and individuals who want to improve their athletic performance or overall fitness. It can also be helpful for individuals who want to improve their balance, coordination, and flexibility, or who are recovering from an injury.
When we perform daily tasks such as picking up a bag of groceries, ascending/descending stairs, grabbing an object from a high cabinet, sitting at our computer, or doing chores around the house they each compound movement patterns that usually involve the legs, core, and arms. Thus the purpose of functional training is to incorporate compound movements into your training program to assist with these daily movement patterns. For example, if you are lifting a 15lb bag of groceries you need to be able to combine gripping, walking, arm strength and core strength to get that bag from your car into the house. We typically do not think about all of the muscles involved with this but think about it. If you core did not work then the weight of the bag will tip you over to one side. If you do not have grip and upper arm strength you will not be able to carry the bag. If you have limited coordination, walking ability, or leg strength then how are you going to get the bag from the car into the house. The point here is that each of these different muscle systems work in conjunction with one another. If one is weak then then others will compromise and increase the risk for injury or strain.
That is why at Functional Training and Rehab Physiotherapy we focus on compound movements that work balance, strength, coordination, and stability all at the same time. Sitting down at a machine in the gym and doing exercise is great, but if you want better result incorporate something that involves standing, balance, and arm and leg movements. Think about it. How much is your core and legs really working if you are sitting at a machine? While these are great supplemental ways to train to get more optimal results in a quicker manner try some functional training at FTR physiotherapy. Want to know your risk for physical imbalances and weakness. Have one of our staff members run you through a comprehensive functional movement screen to determine what movement patterns need to be addressed. Do you have strength differences between your left and right sides, discrepencies in balance or range of motion, or limited flexibility. Find out what areas needs to be addressed through our functional movement screen.
Our instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) technique is a non-invasive, hands-on approach that can help alleviate pain and stiffness in your muscles and joints. This technique is included in our physical therapy sessions and involves using specialized tools to address areas of pain or tightness. By increasing tissue lengthening, short-term range of motion, and collagen alignment, IASTM can help improve your mobility and reduce pain.
Myofascial decompression (MFD), also known as "cupping," is a technique that combines negative pressure with movement science principles to reduce muscle tension, increase the range of motion, and improve circulation. This treatment can be included in our physical therapy sessions to optimize functional movement patterns via neuromuscular re-education. Our team of professionals is trained in MFD and can help you achieve lasting results and improved mobility.
A passion for training and rehabilitation came at an early age after experiencing some injuries snowboarding. Very quickly I learned the benefits of seeing a qualified physical therapist, daily stretching, and progressive strengthening. This led me to get my Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University of St. Augustine in San Marcos, CA. My passion for snowboarding and outdoor activities led me to Big Bear Lake, CA where I saw a need to implement functional training and recovery services as no other place in town provides these all inclusive services. My mission is to provide an all-inclusive facility where everyone no matter what physical ability can recieve professional guided therapies to better improve functional performance.

Dr Jessica Llach has been a physical therapist for 30 + years. She owned and ran Ankle & Foot Physical Therapy in Bakersfield CA for 17 years while raising her family. Her passion for getting people back on their feet to resolve foot and ankle pain started here. She moved to Big Bear Lake, CA in 2020 and quickly fell in love with living in the mountains. Although she loves to treat the foot and ankle she is an extremity specialist and loves to treat the entire body especially sports injuries to return athletes back to their favorite sports and activities.
One day while giving rides as a trail angel she met her first group of Pacific Crest Hikers (PCT) hikers. She started treating the injured hikers and decided to start a mobile Physical Therapy Clinic called Thru Hiker Therapy. It just so happened that the foot and ankle physical therapist landed in the perfect location. Come to find out the number one reason that hikers don’t finish their hike is due to foot and ankle injuries. Living at mile 266 of the PCT seems to be a match made in heaven. The perfect spot to treat injured hikers to get them back on the trail to complete this incredible journey! Jessica loves to hike and couldn’t think of a better group of people to be able to help with her foot and ankle expertise.
